Staff Governor Vacancy
Nominations are invited for the Staff Governor Position on the College's Governing Body
A vacancy has arisen for a Staff Governor on the College’s Governing Body. All members of staff who have a contract of employment with the College, whether full or part-time, academic or support, are eligible to apply.
It is the Governing Body which, amongst many other things, sets and reviews the College’s aims, objectives and policies. It comprises members, one of which is staff governor.
What would I have to do?
All governors serve in a voluntary and unpaid capacity (although necessary expenses may be reimbursed). The duties of this position involve attending meetings of the Governing Body and (currently) three of its Committees in order to provide the staff perspective but at the same time act in the interests of the College as a whole. Training for the role is given, both on appointment and for the continued development of all governors.
What can I offer?
The most important qualities needed for the staff governor position are:
- an understanding of the issues facing the College,
- commitment to attend meetings and otherwise engage in the business of the Governing Body in the interest of the College as a whole
- a willingness to help fellow Governors in their efforts to develop and improve governance and the engagement of the Governing Body with Staff, Students and other Stakeholders
It sounds like it might be time-consuming?
There are 6 scheduled Board meetings per year, taking place twice per term on Tuesday evenings at 6pm. Other meetings may be convened at short notice if other business arises.
There are various Committees (which do a lot of the detailed work) which Governors sit. The Staff Governor is a member of the Resources and Capital Projects Committee and the Curriculum & Quality Committee and the Workforce Development and People Management Committee. The period of office for staff governors is 4 years, subject to continued eligibility.

In the event of there being more than one candidate, an election will be held Monday 28th September 2015 to Friday 2nd October 2015.
